Duke Energy and Electrada have launched the Duke Energy + Electrada Fleet Mobility Microgrid in Mount Holly, North Carolina, a pioneering electrification center designed to provide zero-emission, carbon-free fleet charging for commercial electric vehicles. This facility supports various fleet types, from light- to heavy-duty vehicles, with options for charging either from Duke Energy’s grid or directly from the microgrid, powered by renewable energy. This collaboration aims to guide businesses in achieving their sustainability goals while providing cost savings and strategic support for fleet electrification.
Electrada’s role in the project involves offering “behind the meter” capital investment to ensure reliable and consistent fleet charging with guaranteed 99% uptime. Through a performance-based model, Electrada reduces risks for fleet owners by ensuring grid integrity and stable energy costs, addressing barriers that have hindered widespread fleet electrification in North America. This collaboration with Duke Energy complements Duke’s focus on distribution system performance, enabling a scalable and resilient solution for fleet electrification.
The microgrid includes six fleet charging stations and two Level 2 chargers, with power sources that include solar, battery storage, and hydrogen. This setup also serves as a testing ground for integrating charging technologies, helping Duke Energy assess energy management for fleets from Class 1 pickups to Class 8 haulers. With partners like Daimler Truck North America, Duke Energy and Electrada are working to decarbonize logistics and promote sustainable transportation solutions that align with growing EV adoption, aiming to make fleet electrification a viable path for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in commercial transport.
